Omniverous

Has anyone got any suggestions about how to stop a plastic loving cat eating her way through headphone cables? Rosa has severed the buds of two sets of headphones so far and I am feeling a little hesitant as a result about spending £££ on the set of noise cancelling headsets I so badly need.

This might sound like I'm being a smart ass but ... hide them (the earphones not Rosa). Seriously, it's the only thing that's worked for me. I have to hide knitting, cell phone and battery recharger cords, earphones, and just about everything else that even remotely resembles string. Funny how MY life gets rearranged for a couple of cats that I could dropkick across the room. But I wouldn't cause they're just so darn cute and a little headbutt from a fuzzy faced, wetnosed feline makes up for all the wrong in the world.

yeah, I guess I need to be more careful. the last set were in my handbag and she opened the bag and took the headphones out before eating them. The first set were in a drawer. Same story. Clever cats - not necessarily a good thing.

coat the wires in some foul-tasting substance, like capcaisin (hot pepper wax). you can buy it at a garden center - it's sold for keeping deer from eating your plants. won't harm the cats but i guarantee they'll hate the taste.

Nothing like that works with cats, CB. When they love plastic they love plastic!

I still have two new modem cables in a drawer: I used to buy them in bulk - my late pussycat used to go through one every two weeks on average. She munched my TV aerial so I covered the next one in fabric plaster (get cheap rolls at Savers): it looked stupid (still does) but she left it alone after that.

I'm contemplating getting a new pussycat. I think I've forgotten how angry I used to be about the cable chewing.

My headphones have a little pouch that they live in when not in my ears, which protects them from feline predation. Sadly, plastics of all kinds are to my cats like foie gras and trumpets are to we humans, and so they rifle through dustbins and climb smooth, vertical surfaces just for a munch on the packaging on tampons, the plastic string on the bathroom dangly light switch, hair bands, sticky tape, the windows on unopened post etc etc.

I am thinking of swapping them for an iguana.

Can you not buy them some headphones of their own to chew? Or am I just totally missing the point about cats here?

Dear GSE,

Im too lazy to write an email. My dog Spin and I love your blog(s). She is rethinking her stance on cats and I am thus considering getting one.

Your pair are adorable!! Their pictures currently adorn my computer screen and serve as my display pic for chat.

Cheers!
